A 35-year-old accused arrested by Pune Rural Police; case registered under BNS and Atrocities Act

A 35-year-old stationery shop owner from Daund taluka has been arrested for allegedly raping a 32-year-old woman at gunpoint after offering her a lift near Kurkumbh on the Pune–Solapur Highway.

According to police, the incident took place on March 25 when the woman, a resident of Indapur taluka, was trying to arrange transport to Pimpri Chinchwad. She had reached Kurkumbh in a pick-up vehicle after learning that her brother was allegedly harassing their mother.

While she was waiting near a bridge on the highway, the accused approached her in a car and offered to drop her to Pimpri Chinchwad, saying he was heading towards Pune. Trusting him, the woman accepted the lift.

As per the complaint, after driving for around three kilometres, the accused allegedly stopped the vehicle at an isolated location and attempted to assault her. When she resisted, he allegedly threatened her with a firearm. He then forced her out of the car and sexually assaulted her.

The survivor also stated that the accused physically assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she reported the incident.

After the accused fled the spot, the woman managed to return home to Indapur taluka. She approached the police the following day and lodged a complaint. Investigators were able to trace the accused using the vehicle’s registration number, which the survivor had noted down.

Police officials confirmed that the accused has been arrested based on the complaint. The firearm allegedly used in the crime has not yet been recovered.

A case has been registered at Daund Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A local court has remanded the accused to police custody till March 31.

Further investigation in the case is underway.
