As around 150 colleges coming under Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have not paid their affiliation fees for years, accumulating over ₹1 crore in dues apart from having educational errors consequently, the SPPU administration is planning to close down these colleges in the upcoming year.

The situation has prompted the management council to consider taking action against these defaulting colleges. If they fail to clear their dues promptly, their affiliations will be revoked, leading to their closure.

SPPU, with 783 affiliated colleges, is the largest state university in terms of affiliations. These colleges cater to approximately 7.9 lakh students. Among these, 453 are in the Pune district, 149 in Ahmednagar, and 181 in Nashik and Dadra Nagar Haveli.
