Pune: State Government Approves Elevated and Six-Lane Expansion For Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Highway
Pune: ₹59.75 Crore Sanctioned for Repair and Widening of Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur National Highway, Says PWD Minister
Pune | May 23, 2025: In a major breakthrough following years of sustained efforts, the Maharashtra State Government has granted final approval for the construction of an elevated road and expansion to six lanes on the long-pending Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur National Highway. The official sanction paves the way for much-needed development on this key corridor, which has been plagued by chronic traffic congestion and frequent accidents.
Dr Amol Kolhe informed about the development on his X handle. He shared, “Local unrest had been growing for years due to the delayed progress on the highway, which serves as a crucial link between industrial and rural areas in the Pune district. Taking serious note of the issue, I personally met with Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), urging the initiation of the tendering process based on the DPR prepared by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).”
Following sustained correspondence and follow-ups with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Public Works Minister Shivendra Sinhraje Bhosale, the proposal was finally approved during the state cabinet meeting held on April 22, stated Kolhe.
To address the issue of roads in this area, various works are currently underway. Additionally, the State Cabinet has granted administrative approval for a ₹4,000 crore project involving a four-lane elevated road from Talegaon to Chakan and a six-lane ground-level road from Chakan to Shikrapur. The work will soon commence under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, informed Industries Minister Uday Samant yesterday in Pune. The National Highways Authority of India also provided details of road projects within its jurisdiction during the meeting.
As per the approved plan:
- Talegaon to Chakan will see the construction of a four-lane elevated road.
- Chakan to Shikrapur will be widened into a six-lane highway.
- The project will be executed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
- Land acquisition will be financed through an upfront amount allocated by the state government.
- Excluding GST and minor mineral costs, the project is estimated at ₹3,923.89 crore.
Dr. Kolhe has now appealed to the state authorities to expedite the land acquisition process and instructed MSIDC to begin the tender process without delay. He further urged the government to issue swift approvals for the pending Shirur and Hadapsar to Urulikanchan highway projects as well.
This greenlighted project is expected to greatly ease transportation woes and improve road safety for thousands of daily commuters and transporters in the region.
