Pune Takes A Step Towards Healthy Eating: 35 Schools Recognized As Eat Right Schools By FSSAIÂ
In a significant move towards promoting healthy eating practices, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has identified 35 schools in Pune as Eat Right Schools. This initiative is part of the larger Eat Right India movement, which aims to transform the country’s food system to ensure safe, healthy, and sustainable food. The movement’s tagline, “Sahi Bhojan, Behtar Jeevan,” emphasizes the importance of healthy eating habits.
According to Pritee Chaudhary, Regional Director, Western Region, FSSAI, the Eat Right School program aims to create awareness about food safety, nutrition, and hygiene among school children, who are powerful change agents. The program has already covered over 400 schools in the first phase, with 35 schools in Pune being recognized for their efforts. FSSAI has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state education department to certify all schools in Maharashtra as Eat Right Schools.
In addition to the Eat Right Schools, 10 railway stations in the Pune division, including Pune, Shivajinagar, Chinchwad, and Daund, have been designated as Eat Right Stations. This certification, valid for two years, recognizes the stations’ adherence to safe and hygienic food practices. Training has been provided to food vendors to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
The FSSAI has also launched other initiatives, such as the Clean Street Food Hub and Eat Right Campus programs, to promote environment-friendly food practices. The authority has identified 9 Eat Right Campuses and 3 Eat Right Street Food Hubs in Pune and other cities. Furthermore, the Connect scheme aims to empower women in India by setting up kitchens and ensuring adherence to healthy practices and compliance with food safety standards.
The Eat Right India movement has provided hands-on training to over 3000 vendors on food safety and hygiene under the Swachha Aahar Sankalp program. Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner, Food, FDA-Pune division, emphasized the importance of training food vendors to adhere to safe and hygienic cooking and handling practices.
This initiative is a significant step towards promoting healthy eating habits and ensuring food safety in Pune. By recognizing schools and railway stations that prioritize healthy food practices, FSSAI is encouraging a culture of safe and wholesome food in the city.
With these initiatives, Pune is moving towards a healthier and more sustainable food culture, and FSSAI’s efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the city’s food landscape.
