Pune: Tempo Crashes Into Divider Near Handewadi Chowk, Residents Raise Safety Concerns Over Late-Night Accidents
Pune, May 19, 2026: A late-night road accident near Handewadi Chowk triggered traffic disruption and renewed concerns about road safety after a goods tempo crashed into a road divider on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. on the busy Undri–Handewadi stretch when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the divider with significant force. According to traffic police officials and eyewitnesses present at the scene, the driver was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Police sources said the driver, a resident of Khadki, was returning home after completing a delivery when the accident took place. Although the collision caused major damage to the front portion of the tempo, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.

Soon after the accident, traffic police and local police personnel arrived at the spot to remove the damaged vehicle and regulate traffic movement. Vehicular movement near Handewadi Chowk slowed temporarily due to the incident before normal traffic flow was restored.
Following the incident, local residents once again highlighted the growing number of accidents reported on the Undri–Handewadi Chowk route, particularly during late-night hours. Residents claim that rash driving, heavy vehicle movement, traffic congestion, and suspected drink-and-drive cases have become common in the area.
A bystander at the scene stated, “A very loud sound was heard after the collision. The spot was immediately rushed to by nearby people to offer help. The front side of the tempo was badly damaged, but fortunately no serious injuries were reported. The traffic situation was quickly managed and cleared by police officers.”
Many residents are now urging authorities to increase night patrols, strengthen traffic enforcement, and introduce additional safety measures to reduce accidents along the stretch.
