Pune To Get ₹97 Crore Railway Coaching Depot At Alandi With Japanese-Style Operations
New facility near Pune will maintain 100 coaches daily, reduce pressure on existing yards and support future rail expansion
Pune is set to get a major railway infrastructure boost with plans for a new coaching depot at Alandi on the Pune-Satara route. The proposed project, estimated to cost around ₹97 crore, is expected to maintain and repair nearly 100 coaches every day, including modern LHB coaches and trains such as Vande Bharat.
The new depot will follow Japanese-style operational systems aimed at improving efficiency, speed and maintenance quality. Railway officials are reportedly examining the proposal, and approval is expected after the required clearances.
The project comes as Pune railway station handles rising passenger traffic and increasing train movement, creating pressure on the city’s existing maintenance infrastructure. At present, much of the coach maintenance work is carried out at the Ghorpadi Coaching Maintenance Complex.
Officials believe the Alandi depot will help decentralise operations by shifting cleaning, inspection and repair work away from Pune station. This is expected to improve punctuality, reduce congestion and support smoother train movement in the region.
The proposed facility is planned with three 600-metre maintenance pit lines and two stabling lines where trains can be parked between services. A separate sick line is also planned to isolate and repair faulty coaches without affecting other operations.
The depot will include modern washing systems, technical inspection units, water filling arrangements and electrical maintenance facilities. Storage space for spare parts and railway equipment is also expected to be part of the project.
Railway sources indicate that Pune is likely to witness more originating trains in the coming years, making additional maintenance capacity necessary. The Alandi coaching depot is expected to play a key role in preparing the city for future rail expansion.
Apart from railway benefits, the project may also create direct and indirect employment opportunities in the local area during construction as well as operations.
Once completed, the new depot is expected to become an important support centre for Pune’s rail network, helping improve service quality, coach cleanliness and operational efficiency.
