Pune, April 1, 2026: The upcoming Census of India 2027 will, for the first time, introduce self-enumeration and digital data collection, marking a major step towards modernising one of the world’s largest statistical exercises.

India’s census, regarded as one of the most extensive globally, has a legacy dating back to 1872. Since 1981, it has been conducted every 10 years across the country. The 2027 exercise will be the 16th census overall and the eighth since Independence.

In the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, the first phase covering house listing and housing census will be carried out from May 1 to June 14, 2026. Citizens will have the option to submit their details online through a dedicated self-enumeration portal https://Se.census.gov.in, available in Maharashtra from May 1 to May 15, 2026.

Residents must register on the portal, answer 34 questions, and submit their data. After submission, a unique Self Enumeration ID (SE ID) will be generated and shared via SMS or email, which must be shown to enumerators during their visits between May 16 and June 14.

Enumerators will also use a mobile application for digital data collection during household visits. Officials have assured that all information will remain confidential. The second phase of the census is scheduled for February 2027, and citizens have been urged to participate actively in the process.

Naval Kishore Ram, Commissioner, PMC who is also serving as the Principal Census Officer, along with Additional Commissioner (Special) Omprakash Divte, has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the self-enumeration process for the upcoming census.

The officials urged residents of Pune to submit their information during the self-enumeration window from May 1 to May 15, 2026, and extend full cooperation to ensure the smooth conduct of the census exercise.

They emphasized that maximum participation from citizens will help in accurate data collection, which is crucial for planning and development initiatives.
