Pune Top Cop: Woman Misled Police With Rape Complaint
Pune police have confirmed that the rape complaint filed by a 22-year-old woman in Kondhwa earlier this week was fabricated and aimed at misleading investigators.
Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that the investigation revealed the allegations against a delivery executive were false. “The complaint was intended to mislead and withhold critical information from the police. Such acts tarnish the city’s image and disrupt law and order,” he said.
The complaint, lodged on July 2, had initially sparked public concern over safety in the upscale Kondhwa area. Nearly 500 officers were deployed to scan over 500 CCTV cameras across the city, leading to the detention of a suspect in Baner. However, it was later found that the accused is an IT professional known to the complainant for over a year, and not a delivery agent as claimed.
Investigators established there was no forced entry into the flat nor any use of a chemical spray, as originally alleged. A senior officer revealed that the selfie shared by the complainant with the accused was taken with her consent, and subsequent messages were edited before being shared publicly.
Police facilitated a face-to-face confrontation between the woman and the man on July 4. The man was later released after being served a notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, instructing him to cooperate with the investigation.
The woman’s statement has been recorded before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and video-documented as part of the legal process. Officials are now considering legal provisions under perjury laws for filing a false complaint. “We are exploring all angles. Action will be taken accordingly,” Kumar added.
The complainant is currently undergoing counselling arranged by the police, while her motive for filing the false case remains under investigation.
