Pune’s traffic police have embarked on a new initiative to tackle the city’s pothole problem. They are now actively geotagging potholes across the city to ensure prompt repairs and reduce traffic congestion.

In the past two weeks, the police have geotagged 800 potholes. This system aims to track whether contractors hired by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have repaired the identified potholes and to find new ones that may have emerged. The geotagging system records the exact coordinates of each pothole, which are then shared with PMC authorities. The civic officials use this information to coordinate repairs.

Earlier, in late July, a detailed survey by the traffic police found 554 potholes at 317 critical junctions, which were major contributors to traffic jams. Initially, the survey focused only on junctions, but now the police are inspecting all city roads. Recent rains have worsened the situation, causing more potholes to appear and further complicating traffic.

To manage this, a specialized police vehicle has been equipped to travel around the city, photographing and geotagging potholes efficiently. The updated data, including photos and locations, is quickly sent to PMC. Following repairs by the PMC, traffic police inspect the repaired spots to ensure the work is completed satisfactorily.
