In a recent discussion titled ‘Water in Maharashtra: Facts and Solutions,’ Tukaram Mundhe, Department Secretary of Animal Husbandry, emphasized the urgent need for water accountability at both governmental and citizen levels. Mundhe stressed the importance of reconciling available water resources with their actual utilization and minimizing wastage. He called for the implementation of a ‘Water Accountability’ to address the dire water situation in the state, where many areas receive water only twice a month, highlighting the need for heightened public awareness.

Mundhe made these remarks while inaugurating a state-level conference organized by the Pune Forum for Policy and Governance, focusing on ‘Water Facts, Problems, and Solutions in Maharashtra.’ The event, attended by notable figures such as former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Arun Jamkar, former Secretary of Water Resources Department Dr. D. M. More, President of the Pune Forum for Policy and Governance Shashikant Patil, and Pune Income Tax Commissioner Sangram Gaikwad, aimed to address the challenges surrounding water management in the region.

Dr. D. M. More echoed Mundhe’s concerns, pointing out the increasing demand for water due to rapid urban development. He highlighted instances like the need to release excessive amounts of water into rivers to supply certain areas, despite facing scarcity in other regions. More also mentioned the prevalence of industries like sugar factories in water-scarce districts, emphasizing the need to address such inconsistencies.

The discussion shed light on critical issues such as the contamination of dam water by nearby settlements, with Ujani being cited as a national concern due to its polluted state. These revelations underscore the urgency of implementing effective strategies to address Maharashtra’s water crisis and ensure sustainable water management for the future.
