Two nurses at Aundh Civil Hospital faced suspension following a major blood mix-up incident that occurred on Saturday. The hospital found them guilty after a preliminary enquiry. The mix-up led to two patients receiving transfusions with the wrong blood groups.

The patients involved were a 54-year-old man with pneumonia and another person aged over 70 admitted for anaemia. One patient had blood type B+, while the other had A+. Pune Civil Surgeon Dr N S Yempalle conducted the enquiry and took action against the nurses.

As per Dr Yempalle, the nurses cannot work in private hospitals during the investigation and will be stationed at rural hospitals in Jejuri and Shirur. Even there, they are only allowed to mark attendance, not work. The suspension orders were issued under the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979. The preliminary enquiry revealed that the blood bags clearly mentioned the blood groups and patients’ names. However, during the transfusion, the nurses swapped the pouches, resulting in the mix-up.

After one of the patient’s relatives noticed the error, both patients were moved to the ICU for observation. The son of the pneumonia patient reported that their conditions were stable.

This error is serious, and both patients will be under observation for 72 hours to ensure their stability. The incident highlights the importance of proper procedures in medical facilities to prevent such errors from occurring.
