Pune, May 12, 2026: After months of continuous follow-up by local residents, the Undri area is set to get its first major public garden on a 12,635.08 square metre open space, offering a dedicated recreational and fitness zone for residents.

The initiative was spearheaded by members of the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation, who highlighted the growing need for a safe and accessible green space for walkers, joggers, senior citizens, children, and fitness enthusiasts in the rapidly developing locality.

Residents said the demand for a public garden gained urgency after an unfortunate incident involving an ex-army man who lost his life while out on his regular morning run on a nearby road. The tragedy underscored the lack of safe spaces for exercise and outdoor activities in the area, prompting citizens to intensify their efforts for a dedicated garden. The garden is proposed to come up at Survey No. 4 (Part) and 21 (Part), Undri covering an area of 12,635.08 square metres.

A formal letter requesting the development of the garden was submitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Garden Department in April, May And July 2025 by Renuka Suryavanshi, Sunil Koloti, Sunil Aiyer, and Sajeev Nair, Sandeep Kolhatkar through the foundation. The citizens’ group proposed transforming the vacant land into a well-planned public garden that could benefit thousands of residents.

According to residents, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram later visited the site and approved the location as suitable for the proposed garden project. Citizens have welcomed the positive response from the civic administration and expressed hope that work on the project will begin soon.

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Garden Department has officially acknowledged the proposal submitted by the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation regarding the development of a public garden in Undri. The PMC informed that a well-planned and beautiful public garden on the site will be developed. It further mentioned that the preparation of the garden layout and development plan at the location would be undertaken through Green Yatra. The members thank Naval Kishore Ram, Dr Ashok Ghorpade and Snehal Harpale for taking the efforts and fulfilling our dreams.

“This garden was not given to us. It was earned in grief, in persistence, in the quiet fury of a community that refused to be overlooked. Every tree that grows here will grow in his memory. Every morning walker who steps safely onto this ground
will walk because he could not,” said Sunil Koloti, Member of MURWDF.

Residents said the upcoming garden would not only improve the quality of life in Undri and Mohammadwadi but also encourage healthier lifestyles and provide a much-needed community space in one of Pune’s fastest-growing residential belts.
