Pune: Vadgaon Sheri MLA Bapusaheb Pathare Pushes For Metro Expansion Towards Wagholi, Shirur and Alandi
Pune, April 2, 2026: In a bid to strengthen public transport and tackle rising traffic congestion, MLA Bapusaheb Pathare held a detailed meeting with MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar to discuss the expansion of metro services in and around Pune.
During the meeting, key proposals were discussed, including extending the metro line from Wagholi (Katke Wadi) to Shikrapur or Ranjangaon along the Pune–Ahmednagar highway. Another major proposal involved developing a metro corridor from Pune Airport to Alandi via Vishrantwadi.
Pathare highlighted that rapid urbanisation in these areas has led to a sharp increase in population, resulting in daily traffic challenges for commuters. At present, the Vanaz Ramwadi metro line is operational, while the extension from Ramwadi to Wagholi is underway. Expanding the line further towards Shikrapur or Ranjangaon is expected to significantly ease congestion on the Pune–Ahmednagar highway and support industrial and residential growth in the region.
He also stressed the importance of connecting Pune Airport with Alandi through a metro route, noting that it would reduce traffic congestion around the airport and offer a faster, safer, and more efficient travel option for passengers.
Pathare emphasized that as Pune continues to expand, strengthening public transport infrastructure is essential. He stated that metro connectivity should not remain limited to the city but must extend to suburban and industrial areas to save time, reduce congestion, and promote environmentally sustainable development.
He further urged authorities to prepare detailed technical and feasibility reports for both proposed routes at the earliest and initiate the next steps. Officials indicated that the proposals would be examined as part of the city’s long-term transport planning.
