Pune: Veteran Socialist Leader Dr Kumar Saptarshi Passes Away At 85
Pune, July 19, 2026: Veteran socialist leader, Gandhian thinker, and social activist Dr Kumar Saptarshi passed away on Saturday due to age-related ailments. He was 85. His death marks the end of an era in Maharashtra’s progressive social and political movements, with leaders and activists across the state paying tribute to his lifelong commitment to social justice and democratic values.
Born on August 21, 1941, Dr Saptarshi was a medical doctor by profession but dedicated his life to public service and social reform. In the 1970s, he founded the Yuvak Kranti Dal (Yukrand) in Pune, a progressive socio-political movement that mobilised students and young people to fight for social justice, equality, and democratic rights.
A firm believer in the ideals of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Dr Saptarshi spent decades campaigning against caste discrimination, inequality, and social injustice. He also actively participated in Jayaprakash Narayan’s ‘Total Revolution’ movement, which became one of India’s most significant democratic movements of the 1970s.
Apart from his activism, Dr Saptarshi served as the editor of the magazine Satyagrahi Vichardhara, through which he consistently advocated progressive and Gandhian ideals. He also served as the President of the Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, playing a key role in promoting Gandhian philosophy among younger generations.
In addition to his work as a social reformer, Dr Saptarshi also served as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC).
