Pune Video: Diwali Pahat Celebration at Sarasbaug Turning Violent After Clash Between Two Groups
Police intervene swiftly; event proceeds despite earlier threats and objections from Hindutva groups
The Diwali Pahat programme at Sarasbaug in Pune witnessed tension early Wednesday morning after an argument between two groups escalated into a physical altercation. Police personnel present at the venue immediately intervened, preventing the situation from turning more serious. No major injuries or further disturbances were reported.
Background of the Controversy
This year’s Diwali Pahat event—an annual early-morning musical gathering held on Diwali Padwa—faced opposition from certain Hindutva organisations. They objected to hosting the programme at Sarasbaug, following which the organisers announced its cancellation on Monday, citing threats issued on social media and concerns for public safety.
However, after Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar assured full security on Tuesday, the organisers decided to go ahead with the event as per tradition. The Commissioner stated that the police had taken serious note of the threats and would act against attempts to disturb public harmony.

What Happened at the Venue
Despite tight security, tensions surfaced when two groups began arguing over unspecified reasons, which quickly led to a scuffle. Young participants were seen rushing toward each other before police and fire brigade officials stepped in and dispersed the crowd.
Aside from this brief conflict, the programme continued peacefully. Thousands of citizens had gathered from as early as 3 a.m. to visit the Ganpati temple at Sarasbaug and attend the cultural performances. As this marked the 28th year of the Diwali Pahat tradition, attendees arrived in traditional attire to celebrate Padwa with music and devotion.
Organisers’ Earlier Concerns
Organisers had earlier said they “reluctantly decided to step back” due to threats and to avoid adding pressure on police during the festive season. They emphasised that the event symbolises cultural harmony and joy. Following the police assurance, they restored the programme for Diwali Padwa Day.
Current Status
With strong police deployment, no further untoward incidents were reported. The celebrations continued, and authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and enjoy the festival responsibly.
