Pune: Residents of several societies in Konark Nagar, Clover Park and Viman Nagar are in distress due to improper and temporary road work going on in the area along with an increased height of footpaths.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Krupali Bhatt, a resident of Hermes Drome, Viman Nagar said, “The road work done by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is not proper at all as potholes develop often in the area. People who drive their vehicles through here tend to get their vehicles damaged due to huge potholes. As a result repair expenses for vehicles have to be borne frequently. The road work is not happening properly at all. Most likely, blocks will be laid on the road. The construction equipment like khadi etc. is laid on the road in a haphazard manner. The road here has already become so bad that even if blocks are laid, due to the khadi laid carelessly, the levelling of the road will again get uneven. Any permanent solution hasn’t come yet. Along with roads, the footpaths being laid are also uneven as the level of the footpaths has risen considerably. This has caused a lot of trouble for walking especially for senior citizens as mostly almost every senior citizen here walks with a walking stick along.”

Sajid Attarwala, another resident of Hermes Drome, Viman Nagar said, “Currently, the PMC is excavating everything & final finish is not yet done. With the help of a crane, the PMC has tried & levelled the big potholes, however, the road doesn’t have a smooth finish at all which is problematic. The road condition is in terrible shape especially for two-wheeler vehicles to commute, especially at night.”

Deepaksingh Rajput, another resident of Gokul Gardens, Viman Nagar said, “PMC is simply doing half-baked work. Due to such kind of work, the problems will worsen in the coming time. The main issue is that the water coming from the drainage has to be stopped. But it is not happening. Instead of focusing on these, footpath work is going on which is unnecessary as hawkers & vendors might install their carts here. People face difficulty in walking due to the raised level of the footpath.”

Qaneez Sukhrani, citizen activist & a resident of Viman Nagar, stated that from the last one year, PMC has not been able to find a solution and lay a road according to scientific technique. Exactly one year ago in 2022, potholes and water logging appeared in the Konark Nagar area in Viman Nagar. One year later in 2023, the same issue happened. Along with this, footpaths are not being laid according to IRC norms. Why are the information boards not installed at the site? Why is the field engineer i.e. Jr. Engineer not on site daily? Why are IRC norms not known and not conveyed by PMC engineers to contractors? If the footpath is going to be redone, who will foot the bill for the second time?

Sunil Muley, Branch Engineer, PMC Building Department said, “The work of the footpath in Konark Nagar is going on properly. Still, if residents have any issues with the levelling of footpaths or walking, we will definitely consider it. Even for the road work, everything is going on in a correct manner.”
