A chilling video of a leopard attacking a pet dog while its owner remained engrossed in his phone has gone viral on social media, sparking fresh concerns over rising leopard encounters in Pune’s outskirts.
The incident occurred around 3:30 AM on Sunday in Degaon village, Bhor taluka, as per reports. The pet owner, identified as Jayanand Kale, was lying on a cot outside his house with his dog nearby. The video shows a leopard stealthily approaching and suddenly attacking the sleeping dog, while Kale remained unaware, focused on his mobile screen.
As the attack unfolded, Kale noticed the predator and leaped up in shock, narrowly escaping harm. His screams alerted the household and neighbors, causing the leopard to retreat into the darkness.
Leopard sightings and attacks have been on the rise in Pune, attributed to increasing human encroachment into wildlife habitats. Concerned residents have urged the Forest Department to take immediate action, demanding the installation of traps and preventive measures to mitigate further attacks.
The viral video has reignited discussions about coexistence with wildlife and the urgent need for conservation efforts to address human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
