Pune: Water Level In Holkarwadi Lake Drops Sharply; Residents, Wildlife Face Growing Crisis
Pune, May 20, 2026: The water level in the lake at Holkarwadi near Undri has dropped significantly due to accumulated silt and lack of proper maintenance, raising serious concerns among local residents and environmentalists.
According to citizens, the lake’s water storage capacity has reduced drastically because large quantities of silt have not been removed for several years. Residents have demanded immediate desilting and restoration work to improve water conservation before the monsoon season.
Locals said the shrinking water levels are affecting not only nearby residents but also birds and wildlife that depend on the lake for drinking water. The situation is expected to worsen during summer if timely action is not taken.
Residents pointed out that sewage discharge and unchecked pollution are further damaging the lake ecosystem. Many migratory and local birds, including cranes, egrets, kingfishers and other species, are regularly spotted around the lake area and rely on the water body for survival.
Citizens have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to undertake immediate desilting work and restore the lake’s original capacity. They also demanded measures to prevent pollution and ensure regular maintenance of the water body.
