Pune Water Update: Consistent rainfall leads to surge in water levels at Khadakwasla dam project

Pune: PMC Rejects Water Dues, Disputes Irrigation Department’s Notice
23 July, 2024
The ‘Khadkawasla’ project’s water storage will now sustain Pune residents for the next eight months. During the initial month of the monsoon season, the reservoir’s water levels have notably risen. With the consistent rainfall in the past eight weeks, the four reservoirs of the ‘Khadakwasla’ project are now fuller than usual. Consequently, the persistent water scarcity problem in Pune has been effectively addressed. The water stored in the ‘Khadakwasla’ project will suffice for Pune’s residents for a minimum of the next eight months.
In the ‘Khadakwasla’ project, on the 22nd of July this year, a total of 14.12 TMC (48.41%) of water was available in the four reservoirs that supply water to the city. Compared to the same date last year, there is an extra 0.51 TMC (1.77%) of water available in these reservoirs.
As of yesterday, the total water available in the reservoirs in the district is 57.87 TMC. This amount of water is spread across 26 reservoirs, excluding the six Tata Group reservoirs. Compared to last year, there is a decrease of 3.34 TMC in the water availability. Last year on the same date, the water available was 61.21 TMC. The total number of reservoirs in Pune district is 32, with six of them belonging to the Tata Group.
The Tata Group’s got 19.97 TMC of water in their reservoirs. In Pune district, they own six reservoirs with a total capacity of 42.76 TMC. Right now, they’ve filled up 46.70% of that capacity, which is 19.97 TMC. The reservoirs in the Tata Group include Mulshi, Thokarwadi, Shiravata, Valvhan, Lonavala, and Kundli.
