Pune, June 26, 2023: The weather forecasting department head at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, Anupam Kashyapi, has issued an orange alert for the ghats in and around Pune city, indicating an imminent threat of heavy rainfall in the region over the next 48 hours.

The alert serves as a warning for visitors, as the ghats are expected to experience intense rainfall. Additionally, the city area itself is anticipated to witness an increase in rainfall activity, with moderate rain expected in the range of 15.5 to 64.4 mm over the next 24 hours, accompanied by intense spells.

In light of the adverse weather conditions, Kashyapi has advised the public to refrain from visiting the ghats. The orange alert signifies the need for authorities to be prepared for the situation, while residents should exercise caution when venturing into these areas.

Within the city limits, residents are urged to remain vigilant as significant rainfall may lead to water stagnation in low-lying areas. The existing road conditions in the city are not ideal, and the intensifying rainfall is likely to increase the number of potholes, posing challenges for commuters. It is crucial for the general public to exercise utmost care while traveling to prevent accidents or vehicle damage.

Local authorities have been alerted about the situation and are taking necessary measures to mitigate potential risks. Efforts are underway to minimize water stagnation by ensuring proper drainage systems and prompt repairs of road infrastructure. However, residents are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and consider alternative routes if necessary.

Impact Expected:

  • Localized flooding, water logging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses, primarily in urban areas.
  • Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
  • Traffic disruptions in major cities due to water logging, leading to increased travel time.
  • Minor damage to kutcha roads.
  • Possibility of damage to vulnerable structures.
  • Localized landslides/mudslides.
  • Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.
  • Potential riverine flooding in certain river catchments.

Action Suggested:

  • Check for traffic congestion on your intended route before departure.
  • Follow any traffic advisories issued in this regard.
  • Avoid areas prone to frequent water logging.
  • Refrain from staying in vulnerable structures.
