Weather Update: Thunderstorm Brings 18.2 mm Rain To Pune On Dussehra Eve, Yellow Alert Issued Till October 13
Pune, July 30, 2024 — As July draws to a close, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the ghat regions of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur at the beginning of August. The IMD predicts “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations” in these ghat areas, with a “very likely” probability. In contrast, lighter rainfall is expected in the plains of these districts.
From Monday to Thursday, no red or orange alerts have been issued for the state. Forecasts indicate moderate rainfall in regions such as Marathwada, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Solapur, and Pune until July 31. Heavy rainfall is predicted to return to these areas starting August 1.
Coastal Konkan and Vidarbha regions have been issued yellow alerts, with sporadic rain expected over the next four days. The Meteorological Department has forecasted moderate rain for the coming four days, which should provide relief to flood-affected areas.

The heavy rains from last week led to significant flooding in Pune, particularly affecting low-lying areas like Ekta Nagar near Sinhgad Road. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed for evacuations, and residents have since called for compensation due to water damage to homes and businesses.
Looking ahead to Tuesday, July 30, the weather forecast includes heavy rainfall with thunderstorms for coastal Karnataka, and widespread to isolated thunderstorms across various regions including the Northeast, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and several other states. Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep may experience scattered showers, while Ladakh could see rainfall or snowfall. In West Rajasthan, temperatures are expected to reach 40°C.
The ongoing off-shore trough from South Gujarat to the Kerala coast will continue to produce localized heavy rains and thunderstorms in Maharashtra and Karnataka through Tuesday, with easing conditions anticipated from Wednesday.
In Maharashtra, the heavy rains of last week have subsided, reducing flood risks. Forecasts indicate medium rainfall across the state for the next four days, with no red or orange alerts issued. By August 1, heavy rainfall is expected to return to the ghat regions.
Pune MP and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol highlighted a “communication gap” regarding water discharge during the recent flooding. He stated, “If there was a red alert for the catchment areas and large-scale water releases were planned, both the civic body and the police should have been notified. We must address such communication lapses to prevent future issues.”
In Kolhapur, the water levels in the Panchganga River have decreased by 1 foot 2 inches over the past 24 hours. However, rising water levels in the Krishna River have caused flooding in Shiror Taluka. Consequently, residents near the rivers have been relocated to safer areas.
