Road accidents at Pune’s identified ‘black spots’ saw a significant decline in 2024, according to city police data. The number of accidents in these high-risk zones dropped to 36 last year compared to 60 in 2023, thanks to traffic regulation measures and enforcement initiatives.

Targeting ‘Black Spots’
Following guidelines from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Indian Road Congress, a ‘black spot’ is defined as a 500-meter road stretch where five or more serious accidents involving fatalities or grievous injuries occur over three years. In 2024, Pune district identified 39 such black spots based on police inputs.

Traffic management efforts, including restrictions on heavy vehicle movement, contributed to reducing these hazardous areas. For instance, heavy vehicles were prohibited on the Pune–Ahmednagar Road during peak hours (7 AM–11 AM and 5 PM–9 PM), easing congestion and improving traffic flow.

Police reported a drop in fatal accidents last year, with 310 fatalities in 2024 compared to 334 in 2023. However, the total number of road accidents rose to 1,400 in 2024, up from 1,230 in the previous year.
Measures implemented to streamline traffic included:

Blis1

Issuance of 25 notifications regulating traffic through one-ways and U-turn bans.
Prohibition of heavy vehicles on specific routes to alleviate congestion on six major city roads.
Police credited a multi-fold increase in enforcement for improving road safety. Key statistics comparing 2023 and 2024 include:

Drunken driving cases: 384 (2023) → 5,293 (2024)
Wrong-side driving: 35,556 (2023) → 2,06,215 (2024)
Triple-seat riding: 22,111 (2023) → 48,564 (2024)
Rash driving: 689 (2023) → 8,687 (2024)
Additionally, 1,345 driving licenses were canceled in 2024 for repeated traffic violations.

The tragic Porsche car accident in May 2024, which claimed the lives of two IT engineers, led to intensified enforcement. The incident involved a 17-year-old driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol, sparking public outrage over attempts to shield the accused. The police arrested ten individuals, including the driver’s parents and Sassoon Hospital staff, for tampering with evidence.
While strides have been made in reducing accidents at black spots and fatalities, the rise in total accidents highlights the need for continued vigilance and infrastructure improvements. The police emphasized public cooperation in adhering to traffic rules to ensure safer roads across Pune.
