Major progress is underway at one of Pune’s most crowded and risky junctions, as construction begins on a 508-metre-long foot-over-bridge (FOB) at Chandni Chowk along the Bengaluru–Mumbai highway bypass. This development is set to transform pedestrian movement in the area, where crossing the road has long been a challenge. This bridge forms an important part of the Vanaz-to-Chandni Chowk Metro extension. Covering a total stretch of 1,123 metres, the project will include two key stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk. With this integration, commuters will be able to access metro services easily and safely on foot.

After completion, the FOB will directly connect bus stops on the highway with the upcoming metro station at Chandni Chowk. This will eliminate the need for pedestrians to navigate through heavy traffic, offering a much safer and more convenient commuting experience.

Chandni Chowk serves as an important point for long-distance and local travel across Maharashtra. Buses traveling toward cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara pass through this area regularly. It also supports daily traffic heading toward key industrial and IT zones like Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Pirangut, making the bridge highly significant for connectivity.

Crossing the highway at this junction has always been risky, especially during peak hours when traffic is at its heaviest. The new foot-over-bridge aims to remove this danger by keeping pedestrians away from fast-moving vehicles, greatly reducing the chances of accidents.

Residents from surrounding areas, including Bavdhan, have welcomed the project. For many, crossing the bypass during busy hours has been a daily struggle. The upcoming bridge is expected to put an end to these difficulties and make movement much easier. The benefits are not limited to pedestrians. Drivers, including cab and bus operators, often face sudden interruptions when people attempt to cross the road. With a proper crossing structure in place, traffic flow is expected to improve, making roads safer for everyone.

Time savings will be another key outcome of this project. Without needing to wait for traffic gaps, commuters will be able to move quickly between buses and metro services. This will make daily travel more efficient and less time-consuming.
