Dr. Anand Pandit, a renowned paediatrician at KEM Hospital, Pune, passed away on Friday at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. His contributions to paediatrics, especially in neonatal care, have left an indelible mark on the medical field.

With over five decades of experience, Dr. Pandit played a pivotal role in the development of paediatrics at KEM Hospital. He was instrumental in founding the hospital’s paediatrics department in 1967 and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 1977, which became one of India’s leading units for neonatal care.

Working alongside Dr. Banoo Coyaji, Dr. Pandit was part of the team that witnessed the transformation of KEM Hospital from a modest facility into a prominent tertiary care institution. One of his groundbreaking achievements was helping to establish the TDH Rehabilitation and Morris Child Development Centre in 1979. This was the first centre of its kind in Pune, offering comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for children’s developmental and behavioural issues under one roof.

In an official statement, KEM Hospital expressed deep sorrow at Dr. Pandit’s passing, stating, “Dr. Pandit’s loss is deeply felt by the entire KEM family, his many students, and patients. We are committed to carrying forward his remarkable legacy.”

Dr. Umesh Vaidya, head of neonatology at KEM, reflected on his 40-year-long association with Dr. Pandit. “He was not only a mentor but an exemplary figure who taught us the values of humility, honesty, and integrity. His clinical acumen was exceptional, and his dedication to serving society went beyond conventional professional boundaries,” Dr. Vaidya shared.

Dr. Sandeep Kadam, consultant neonatologist at KEM, also paid tribute to Dr. Pandit, calling him a visionary teacher and compassionate clinician. “He didn’t just teach us medicine; he imparted lessons in humanity and empathy,” Dr. Kadam said.

Dr. Pandit’s passing marks the end of an era in paediatric care at KEM Hospital, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of doctors.
