Pune’s roads have become increasingly hazardous, with a total of 278 fatalities reported in 271 road accidents this year. According to data from the Pune traffic police department, two-wheeler riders accounted for the highest number of deaths.

The accidents occurred across various parts of the city, with areas such as Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, Katraj, Hadapsar, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass highway emerging as high-risk zones. The Pune-Solapur Road and Pune-Ahmednagar stretches are particularly prone to serious accidents.

The inclusion of areas like Lonikand and Loni Kalbhor under the Pune police commissionerate has added to the challenges, given the significant volume of daily heavy traffic on these routes. Residents and traffic experts attribute the rising number of accidents to the increasing presence of heavy vehicles on the city’s roads.

“Heavy vehicles should be banned during the daytime,” said a resident of Katraj-Kondhwa Road. “Riding a bike on this road is terrifying, especially with children or elderly family members. If these heavy vehicles hit us, there’s little chance of survival.”

The authorities have taken steps to mitigate these risks, including banning heavy vehicles on key city roads during the day. “This ban has helped improve traffic flow in these areas,” said Amol Zende, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) while communicating with media person about the issue.

However, traffic experts emphasize that more stringent enforcement and better road safety measures are urgently needed to address the rising number of fatalities. “For many, Pune’s roads are no longer thoroughfares but veritable death traps,” said a resident of Navi Peth on the condition of anonymity.
