Pune Municipal Corporation launches Van Mahotsav from June 5 to August 14 to promote urban afforestation.

In a bid to counteract the environmental damage caused by rapid urbanisation and deforestation, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has once again launched its annual Van Mahotsav, a green initiative that encourages tree plantation by offering saplings at a highly subsidised rate.

Starting June 5 and continuing till August 14, this year’s Van Mahotsav offers over 15 varieties of native saplings for just ₹5 each. These saplings will be available at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Garden on Jangli Maharaj Road, making it a golden opportunity for Pune residents interested in gardening and environmental conservation.

What Makes This Initiative Special?

  • The PMC has been running this program consistently for the past 27–28 years, according to PMC’s Garden Superintendent Ashok Ghorpade.
  • Saplings include native species such as banyan (vad), peepal, neem, tamhan, arjun, bakul, behda, custard apple (sitaphal), and mahua (moh).
  • These saplings are commonly planted in housing societies, school premises, terraces, and nearby hills, contributing significantly to the city’s green cover.

With shrinking green spaces due to urban growth, initiatives like this offer an accessible way for citizens to contribute to the environment. The PMC’s affordable pricing ensures high-quality saplings are available to all, helping to create and maintain green belts across the city.

Every year, the response from Pune residents is enthusiastic. On average, 35,000 to 40,000 saplings are sold annually under this scheme. This large-scale participation reflects growing environmental awareness and the public’s willingness to take action.

This year too, Pune’s Van Mahotsav promises to bring nature closer to home, one sapling at a time.
