Subdued rainfall in Pune and nearby regions on Sunday; ghat areas may see a spike in showers as per forecast
After a week of intense downpour, rainfall activity in Pune and surrounding areas eased on Sunday. The ghat regions of the district, which had seen significant showers, experienced relatively subdued rain, with Tamhini recording 91mm and Lonavla 18mm over the past 24 hours. City areas saw light showers, with Shivajinagar receiving 2.9mm, Pashan 6.3mm, Lohegaon 2.2mm, Chinchwad 1.5mm, NDA 0.5mm, and Koregaon Park also 0.5mm.
Surrounding areas such as Girivan (8mm), Kurvande (5mm), Nimgiri (3.5mm), Bhor (2.5mm), and Talegaon (0.5mm) also received limited rain. Despite the drop in intensity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune’s ghat sections on Monday, forecasting an increase in rainfall activity. The IMD said, “Generally cloudy sky and light rain is very likely.”
An orange alert has also been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Satara districts, where conditions may worsen on Monday. The collective water storage of Pune’s four major dams reached 10.17 TMC (34.87%). Rainfall in the catchment areas included over 18mm in Panshet, 14mm in Varasgaon, 40mm in Temghar, and 1mm in Khadakwasla.
Meanwhile, citizens across Pune have reported an increase in mosquito breeding due to the recent weather fluctuations. Many are urging the two civic bodies to intensify fogging and inspect waterlogged areas to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases. “The administration must ensure that fogging is done regularly. Waterlogged areas should be inspected,” a local resident said.
Looking ahead, the IMD has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan and Goa regions between June 22 and 26. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Gujarat on June 22 and over Madhya Pradesh on June 23 and 24.
Former IMD official K S Hosalikar noted, “In the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is expected at many places in Konkan and the ghat regions, with isolated heavy spells. Light to moderate showers likely in interior Maharashtra. Vidarbha must remain alert. Mumbai and Thane may see light to moderate showers with 1–2 intense spells. Umbrellas essential. Roads may be wet, strong winds likely.”
The IMD also confirmed that the southwest monsoon further advanced into most parts of Himachal Pradesh, all of Ladakh and Kashmir, most of Jammu, and parts of Punjab. Over the next two days, favourable conditions are expected for the monsoon to cover remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh.
