The city of Pimpri-Chinchwad is mourning the loss of business icon Ratan Tata, who passed away recently. Residents and industrialists alike are paying tribute to his transformative impact on the city. Ratan Tata’s vision for Pimpri-Chinchwad has transformed the city into Maharashtra’s top job hub.

Tata Motors, which set up shop in the area in the late 1960s, revolutionized the industrial landscape. Abhay Bhor, president of the Forum for Pimpri-Chinchwad Small Industries Association, praised Ratan Tata’s emphasis on local industries and vendors. “This approach created thousands of jobs and fostered hope for residents and newcomers.” Labour leader Yeshwant Bhosale noted that Tata Motors experienced only one industrial strike in over 50 years due to its harmonious worker-management relationship.

Tata Motors’ presence attracted other major industries, including Bajaj Auto and Thermax, to the area. Today, Pimpri-Chinchwad boasts over 10,000 large, medium, and small industrial units. Manohar Paralkar, a retired Tata Motors general manager, recalled Ratan Tata’s down-to-earth nature. “He freely mingled with workers and staff, even waiting in line for meals at the canteen.”

Ratan Tata prioritized worker welfare, ensuring respect and dignity for all employees. He introduced subsidized meals for workers and staff, which remained unchanged despite inflation. “He believed quality meals at a low price would bring joy to workers, reflecting in their output,” said a company official.
