Record-Breaking ₹1.17 Crore Bid Sets New Benchmark for India’s Most Expensive VIP Number Plate
Number plates have long been more than just vehicle identifiers for many luxury-car buyers and numerology enthusiasts—they are symbols of luck, status, and personal identity. This fascination reached a new high recently when the ultra-rare registration HR88B8888 sparked an intense bidding war, ultimately touching an unbelievable ₹1.17 crore during an online auction for VIP four-wheeler numbers in Sonipat’s Kundli region.
The eye-catching sequence of multiple eights, combined with the letter ‘B’ that visually resembles the number “8,” made this plate appear like an unbroken line of lucky digits—dramatically boosting its appeal.
The bidding process, conducted through the official online portal, remained competitive from the start. The amount had already crossed ₹88 lakh by midday, and by the time the auction wrapped up on Tuesday evening (with the portal’s final closure on Wednesday at 5 pm), the figure had reached a historic ₹1.17 crore.
Officials revealed that no VIP number in the country has ever attracted such a high offer before, marking this as India’s most expensive registration plate to date.
Though the record-setting amount has been declared, the number hasn’t been officially secured yet. As per the rules, the highest bidder is required to deposit the full payment within five days; only then will the number be blocked for their use.
Failing to do so will send the much-coveted plate back into the auction system. Because the number belongs to the Kundli RTO series, the eventual owner must also register their vehicle in that jurisdiction.
This particular auction witnessed unusually large participation, far surpassing the typical turnout seen in weekly VIP-number sales. Starting from a base price of just ₹50,000, the rapid escalation into crores showcased the growing craze for distinctive and meaningful number plates.
Haryana’s regular system of opening registrations on Fridays, holding competitive bidding early in the week, and announcing results every Wednesday continues to draw enthusiasts hoping to secure their dream sequence.
