Pune: The residents of Model Colony Shivaji Nagar are plagued with the issue of garbage littering on the footpaths.  As a result, the residents are faced with blocked footpaths, foul smells and health hazards. The residents have been consistently urging the civic body to clean the footpath on Pawar Road in Model Colony but it appears that the complaint has fallen on deaf ears.

While talking to Pune Pulse, Rajendra Kumar Kale, a resident of Rajas Garden Society added, “The presence of garbage is unhygienic and is a reason for spreading diseases. Citizens are unable to walk on the footpaths due to the accumulation of garbage. This situation goes against the aesthetics of city life and reflects a corrupt local administration. The taxes we pay are being misused. Moreover, it endangers the lives of people, especially senior citizens and children, who are forced to walk on the road amidst vehicular traffic.”

Another resident, Aniruddha Vaidya, Rajas Garden Society, added, “Pedestrians are unable to use the footpaths due to the littered garbage. The situation worsens during the monsoon season as the foul smell emitted from the garbage causes various health hazards for the residents. We have lodged complaints with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), but no action has been taken.”

Another resident, Pramod Namjoshi, further added, “The unhygienic conditions in the surroundings can give rise to several diseases. The moist conditions also promote the growth of fungus, making the situation even worse.”

While talking to Pune Pulse, Vinod Sarode, Sanitary Inspector, Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC)  added, “We have assigned individuals for garbage collection. PMC employees clean the footpath every day, but some people continue to dump their garbage in the absence of our employees. We urge people not to dispose of their garbage in open spaces as it poses health hazards.”
