Even before the lockdown residents of the NIBM – Undri road were in great trouble due to the nuisance created by transgenders who used to often stand in the forest premises on the road stretch post 7 pm till late night.

Even now after the unlocking the problems were faced by the commuters as well as locals who raised the issue with Local Corporator Nanda Lonkar of Prabhag 26.

A joint meeting was held between the residents and Police officials of Kondhwa Police station by Nanda Lonkar recently. Vinayak Gaikwad, senior police inspector of the Kondhwa Police station, assured to increase patrolling in the area.

Nanda Lonkar told Pune Pulse that this has been an ongoing problem in the area which had stopped due to lockdown. But ever since unlocking began the problem started arising. I have raised this issue with the Police officials and they have assured to take action and resolve it.

When Pune Pulse spoke to Vinayak Gaikwad, senior police inspector of Kondhwa Police station he informed that the problem has been resolved by increasing the police patrolling in the area and also asked the corporator Nanda Lonkar to illuminate the area more so that the miscreants do not take advantage of the isolated place. Things have improved in the last few days and we are hoping that the citizens won’t face any awkwardness further. Citizens can call us without any hesitation, he added.

Shehnaz Chawla of Nibm Undri Road Forum told Pune Pulse that over thirty citizens & residents of NIBM and Undri Road along with corporator Nanda Lonkar, Narayan & Yuvraj Lonkar formed a human chain last night to highlight the issue of ongoing prostitution activity in the NIBM Forest area. The illegal activity in the forest has been going on for a long time now and is causing inconvenience to passers by and others on two wheelers. ” A lot of residents have complained and hence this issue was taken up actively by our Corporator Nanda Lonkar. Right from speaking to the cops, working on organising the street lights and assuring the residents of a permanent solution, the corporator Nanda Lonkar and her team have assured the citizens that necessary action will be taken. We request the citizens to be alert and join us in making NIBM Undri road safe, ” Chawla added.

Parveen Tambe another resident of the area said, “We are feeling very insecured to cross the road after it gets dark. People living here are passed lewd comments. We suspect that it a huge circle of issues which police and Pune city administration needs to resolve.”

Anupama Silas who runs an NGO in Kondhwa said, “It was an initiative of the local residents of NIBM road. Shehnaaz Chawla along with the Corporator Nanda Lonkar, Yuvraj Lonkar and myself Director of Vanitashray and the local Kondhwa police have taken this initiative to tackle the growing issue of illegal practices of prostitution on NIBM rd.”

The residents said that the police patrolling should be such that these people should not roam on these roads again in future.

Real problems :

  • Poor lighting on the road
  • Barbed wires needed on Forest land
