Civic body’s motive questioned as pool remains closed for 6 months

The Bapusaheb Kedari Swimming pool in Wanowrie has remained beyond the reach of the public for the past few months due to a drowning incident that happened months back.

This is the only swimming pool run by the Pune municipal Corporation in Wanowrie.
On March 20, 2022, a 17 year old student, died of drowning at the Wanowrie pool, after which the pool was sealed by the civic authorities.
The civic body has not been maintaining the pool since the incident and swimmers are not being allowed to use the facility.

There are questions from various quarters, especially the swimmers, as to whether the civic body plans to reopen the pool or will it remain shut forever.

Santosh Varule, deputy commissioner, sports department, PMC while speaking to Pune Pulse said that the new proposal will be put up for the swimming pool in Wanowrie. “The pool will become usable after Diwali. The process to initiate the proposal will take another eight to ten days. The contractor concerned shall remain onboard for eleven months.”

Kalinda Punde, former corporator said, “New tenders shall be opened by Pune Municipal Corporation soon. Residents should not be refrained from using any public amenity. We are hoping that the facility is opened soon.”

Another corporator from Wanawadi, Prashant Jagtap, said, “I recently met the concerned officials and have asked them to ensure that all safety protocols are followed strictly. PMC should ensure that citizens shouldn’t face any difficulty.”

With the drowning incident that took place at the pool, local residents are also demanding safety precautions are a must and number of swimmers must be monitored thoroughly by the life guards to avert such incidents.
