Retired ACP Injured After Motorcycle Handle Snags On Loose Cable Wire In Pune
A 68-year-old retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Arvind Ramchandra Patil, suffered multiple injuries after his motorcycle handle became caught in a hanging internet cable at Hirabaug Chowk on Tilak Road around 10 a.m. on Monday.
Patil, who resides in Bibvewadi, was returning home after meeting morning walkers in Sarasbaug when the accident occurred. “I had just crossed the Hirabaug traffic signal when the right handle of my motorcycle got stuck in a loose cable wire. This caused the front wheel to lift off the ground, and I lost control. The bike skidded and fell on me,” he said.
He sustained injuries to his left leg, shoulder, waist, and required stitches on his right-hand ring finger. A passer-by, Mahesh Walse-Patil, came to his aid, and with the help of retired police inspector Dattaray Temghare and Patil’s son Dhariryasheel, he was taken to a private hospital on Pune-Satara Road. Although discharged after treatment, doctors informed him of nerve damage in the injured finger, resulting in numbness.
Senior Inspector Yuvraj Nandre from Swargate Police Station stated that the hanging cable belonged to a private internet service provider. Fire brigade officials secured the cable by tying it to a nearby tree to avoid further mishaps.
Police have sent a letter to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Tilak Road ward office, seeking details of those responsible for the unattended cable. Based on Patil’s complaint, a case has been registered against the internet service contractor, a government contractor, and their staff under sections 125 (act endangering life), 285 (negligent conduct), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Witness Mahesh Walse-Patil, a local transport businessman, confirmed that the wire had been dangling from a tree for four days. “I take this route daily and noticed the hazard. The wire had been neglected by the authorities, and its entanglement in ACP Patil’s bike even caused a tree branch to snap due to the sudden tension,” he said.
