Pune : For over a month, construction on the Yerawada metro station came to a standstill due to local opposition to the entry-exit structure. Responding to concerns from residents and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding traffic congestion, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) has unveiled a redesigned plan that aims to alleviate traffic issues in the area.

The Yerawada metro station project, part of the Pune Metro executed by Maha Metro, had faced a halt in construction for more than a month following objections from locals. On Monday, Maha Metro officials finalized a revised entry-exit plan for the Yerawada metro station. According to the new plan, Maha Metro will create an approach road to Yerawada behind the entry-exit point, with the PMC contributing land for road development.

Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha Metro, highlighted the collaborative planning between Pune Metro and PMC, emphasizing that the innovative design aims not only to address traffic congestion but also promises multi-modal integration for improved connectivity and faster travel options, particularly to Pune Airport. The near completion of the Yerawada station signifies a significant advancement in Pune’s public transportation infrastructure.

Atul Gadgil, Director of Operations at Maha Metro, stated, “We have revised the entry-exit plan and will provide an additional access point to the Yerawada area. The entry-exit point pillars will be relocated to avoid traffic disruptions. Work on this will commence in the next couple of days.”

Yerawada, situated on the Pune-Nagar National Highway, experiences a constant flow of high-volume traffic. The redesigned entry and exit plan for the Yerawada metro station aims to harmonize with existing traffic flow, easing congestion in the area. Collaboration between Pune Metro and PMC involves the installation of lifts, escalators, and pedestrian stairs on both sides of the Yerawada metro station.

Maha Metro officials reported significant milestones in the Pune Metro project, with stations on the Ruby Hall to Ramwadi route nearing completion. Once the remaining work is finalized, this route will open to passengers, providing relief to the densely populated area of Yerawada.

The strategic location of the Yerawada metro station, approximately 4.8 km from Pune Airport, has prompted plans for a feeder bus service in collaboration with the PMPML. This service aims to offer convenient travel for passengers, enhancing connectivity between the Yerawada metro station and the airport. Special feeder bus stops and two bus bays are planned at the airport to improve accessibility.
