“Richa Kar’s Journey: From Breaking Taboos to Building Zivame, India’s Largest Lingerie Brand, Acquired by Reliance Retail in 2020”
Richa Kar: The Visionary Behind Zivame's Revolutionary Journey
Richa Kar’s journey to establishing Zivame, India’s largest online lingerie brand, is a tale of resilience, courage, and breaking societal norms. Growing up in a traditional family in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, Kar was raised in an environment where discussing lingerie was taboo. Despite the cultural constraints, she dared to create a platform that would transform how Indian women shop for lingerie, prioritizing privacy, dignity, and a wide range of choices.
Kar’s inspiration for Zivame stemmed from her own experiences and observations. She recognized the discomfort women faced while purchasing lingerie in India, where male salesmen often lacked the knowledge and sensitivity needed for such a personal shopping experience. This, coupled with privacy concerns, led many women to compromise on fit and comfort. Armed with experience from working with global lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret, Kar was determined to change this scenario.
In 2011, she launched Zivame, a name derived from the Hebrew word meaning “radiant me.” The online platform offered a staggering 5,000 designs, 50 brands, and 100 sizes, quickly becoming a favorite among Indian women. Zivame wasn’t just about selling lingerie; it was about empowering women to make informed choices without societal judgment. Kar’s vision extended beyond just an e-commerce site; she aimed to create a brand that resonated with women across India, offering them a dignified and private shopping experience.
Despite facing opposition from her own family, who were initially embarrassed by her venture, Kar remained steadfast in her vision. Her dedication paid off when Zivame started attracting significant investor interest. By 2015, the company had secured substantial funding, further solidifying its place in the market.
In 2016, Kar expanded Zivame’s presence by opening physical stores, known as Zivame Studios, bringing the brand closer to women in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Even after stepping down as CEO in 2017, Kar continued to serve on the board of directors, maintaining her influence over the brand’s direction.
Today, Zivame is a household name, with a valuation exceeding Rs. 681 crores. In 2020, the brand was acquired by Reliance Retail, marking another milestone in its success story. Richa Kar’s journey from a small town in Jharkhand to the helm of a multi-crore company is a powerful reminder that challenging societal norms can lead to remarkable achievements.
