Pune, January 14, 2026: The first phase of school registration under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has officially begun, the state School Education Department announced on Monday. Schools can complete the registration and verification process until January 19, after which the next stage of the admission process for the 2026–27 academic year will commence.

As per provisions of the RTE Act, 25 per cent of seats in unaided and self-financed English-medium schools are reserved for children from economically weaker sections and reserved categories, ensuring access to free education. To facilitate this, the education department has activated the online portal for registration and verification of eligible schools.

Officials stressed that verification is a critical step following registration and must be carried out with strict adherence to guidelines. Education officers have been directed to ensure that schools which are non-operational, unauthorised, have minority status, or have shifted locations are not included in the RTE 25 per cent quota process. Any errors or irregularities during verification will be the sole responsibility of the concerned education officers.

A senior education department official clarified that schools must accurately select their recognised education board during registration. “If a school is approved under the state board, it must not register itself under a central board. The information submitted should strictly match the school’s official recognition,” the official said.

The Director of the Primary Education Department has instructed all schools to complete the registration and verification process within the prescribed timeline to avoid delays in subsequent admission phases.

The RTE admission process aims to ensure equitable access to quality education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and is closely monitored by the education authorities to maintain transparency and compliance.
