Runway Expansion At Pune Airport Put On Fast Track To Boost International Connectivity
The long-pending runway expansion project at Pune Airport has officially shifted to the fast track, following a high-level meeting of senior officials from various departments. The expansion aims to accommodate larger aircraft and increase the frequency of international flights to and from Pune.
The green signal for the project has paved the way for rapid execution. During the meeting, officials directed that the work be expedited.
A major issue—the alternative route towards Lohegaon—has been resolved, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) coordinating with the Indian Air Force to develop the new road.
The meeting, chaired by Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, included Airport Director Santosh Dhoke, PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, senior officials from the Air Force, and other key department heads. Discussions covered land acquisition, the construction of the alternative Lohegaon road, and other technical aspects.
The Air Force has agreed in principle to provide necessary land for airport expansion, in exchange for alternative space. Due to the runway expansion, the current road from Vishrantwadi to Lohegaon will be affected, necessitating a new route through Air Force land. The cost of this road will be borne by PMC.
With Purandar airport still under planning, immediate enhancement of Pune Airport is critical.
