Saathi Haath Badhana Social Foundation is a non-profit volunteer collective, relocated to Gaikwad Nagar, Aundh, Pune.

Listening Post, the flagship program of SHB Social Foundation, is a place for those struggling with stress or emotional distress. The “Listening Post” Helpline will continue to operate for 4 hours every evening, walk-ins will now be available on some weekday mornings as well in the Community center in Gaikwad Nagar.

Listening Post, started as a response to feelings of despair and loneliness, has so far supported a wide range of emotional distress, from exam jitters and parental pressure to loneliness, domestic violence, and workplace stress. It is a safe and supportive space for individuals of all ages to share their feelings and struggles, without fear of judgement.

The conversations are confidential and proved to be of immense support especially for those going through mental trauma (especially during the COVID like pandemics).

The fact that it is volunteer-driven also shows how community interventions can help support others within. The volunteers come from diverse fields, and they undergo rigorous training and Listening practice before they start supporting the callers and the walk-ins.

Their skills in supportive or active Listening helps unravel layers of understanding for the caller/walk-in. The Listening Post has completed nine years and many walk-ins/callers have returned/mailed to express their feelings of appreciation for the support received during their difficult times.

The volunteers generously give their time for this service to the community. Listening Post is completely free and is supported by generous donations, again by members of the community or by the volunteers themselves.

Listening Post is a place of calm and helps a person feel supported when they face anxiety or stress during a difficult time in their lives. Non-judgmental listening is empathetic and helps a person gain clarity to arrive at their own solution. It is therefore very critical today to break down the stigma around mental health and encourage people to seek help when they need it.
