A total of 20 labourers approached the labour commissioner’s office in Pune on Friday with a complaint against their employer. These twenty labourers were employees of Mudra Industries, which has recently changed its name to Datson Engineering, until they were fired very recently.

The labourers approached the Wakadewadi-based labour commissioner’s office, with the support of Maharashtra Navnirman Kamgar Sena to voice their concerns about their sudden dismissal from the spare parts manufacturer for whom they had been working hard for years in spite of physical injuries.

Labourers met Sudhir Gaikwad, assistant commissioner of labour, and filed a complaint.

“We have been working in the company for the last 17 years. Now the company’s name has been changed. They have sacked us all of a sudden without giving prior notice. Most of us who have lost their jobs have broken our fingers while working for the company,” said a labourer.

Anil Tukaram Kaudare, aged 45, has been working for the company for the last 16 years, expressed his grief over losing his job. “Despite working hard, I have lost my job. When we tried to talk to the management, the company threatened us. So, we approached Maharashtra Navnirman Kamgar Sena for help,” he said. Ramdas Ganpat Adhari, aged 37, echoed Kaudare’s words.

Condemning the treatment meted out to the labourers, Ketan Naik, secretary, Maharashtra Navnirman Kamgar Sena said, “This is inhuman. Companies cannot just use the labourers as they wish and dismiss them when they don’t need them. This is malpractice. The government is completely ignoring them, where exactly should the workers go? Parashuram Salve and I visited Mudra Industries, in the capacity of secretaries of Maharashtra Navnirman Kamgar Sena, visited Mudra Industries and made an effort to discuss about the issue but with no result.”

Sudhir Gaikwad, assistant commissioner of Labour said that grievances of the workers have been heard and action has been initiated. “We have noticed that the company has neglected few norms. We have initiated action against the company,” he said.
