The final stretch of the ₹55,000 crore Samruddhi Expressway, linking Nagpur to Mumbai, is ready for inauguration. The 701-km high-speed corridor promises to slash travel time by half.

The eagerly awaited final stretch of the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg—linking Igatpuri to Thane—is now complete. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has formally approached the state government to schedule an inauguration ceremony. If plans proceed smoothly, this last segment could be opened to the public by early May, allowing uninterrupted travel from Nagpur to Mumbai. According to the Hindustan Times, the event may also feature the launch of the southbound carriageway of the Thane Creek Bridge.

Anil Gaikwad, Managing Director of MSRDC, confirmed that both projects are fully ready for inauguration. “Once opened, connectivity to Navi Mumbai, Pune, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport will improve greatly,” he stated.

Direct Connectivity Between Nagpur and Mumbai

Once the Igatpuri to Amane section becomes operational, vehicles traveling from Nagpur will be able to reach Mumbai without any breaks. This development will mark the full opening of the 701 km expressway, stretching from Nagpur to Mumbai. The expressway will drastically reduce travel time and boost intercity connectivity across the state.

Delays in Completion of the Final Segment

The final 76-kilometer stretch between Igatpuri and Amane was initially expected to be inaugurated ahead of the state assembly elections. However, technical challenges, particularly the construction of a key bridge at Khardi, led to delays. Additionally, work on the connecting road from Amane to Vadape was still in progress, further postponing the launch.

Although MSRDC aimed to open this section by February, the incomplete connector bridge at Vadape delayed the inauguration.

Current Travel Bottlenecks

At present, the Thane-Vadape stretch is still under construction, leading to traffic congestion and slow movement in the area. Even after the Samruddhi Expressway becomes fully functional, travelers heading from Mumbai to Amane may still experience temporary delays until the remaining roadwork is finished. Officials estimate it may take a few more months to complete.

Traffic Diversions in Place

MSRDC officials have confirmed that the remaining connector bridge near Vadape will require another two months to finish. In the meantime, vehicles will be rerouted through alternative routes to manage traffic flow efficiently.

Key Features of the Samruddhi Expressway

The Samruddhi Expressway is a 701-kilometer-long, six-lane, access-controlled high-speed corridor connecting Mumbai and Nagpur. Constructed in 16 phases over a decade, the project has cut travel time between the two cities from 16 hours to just 8 hours.

The route passes through 10 districts—Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Nashik, and Thane—and covers 390 villages. The expressway features environmentally conscious designs, including underpasses and overpasses for three wildlife sanctuaries.

Its infrastructure includes 33 big bridges, 274 small bridges, six tunnels (with the longest at Kasara Ghat), and 65 flyovers. It is also equipped with electric vehicle charging stations and solar power plants. Designed for speeds up to 150 km/h, the Samruddhi Expressway is Maharashtra’s second major expressway project after the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Developed at an estimated cost of ₹55,000 crore, the expressway is also known as a “super-communication corridor” due to its strategic importance.

Phased Development Timeline

  • Phase 1: Nagpur to Shirdi (520 km), inaugurated in December 2022
  • Phase 2: Shirdi to Bharvir (around 80 km), opened in May 2023
  • Phase 3: Bharvir to Igatpuri (23 km), launched in March 2024
  • Phase 4: Igatpuri to Amane (76 km), now ready for inauguration

This final segment will complete the expressway—an ambitious project originally envisioned by former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Previous phases were inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and MSRDC Minister Dada Bhuse.

Sources suggest the state may invite the Prime Minister to inaugurate the stretch during his visit to Mumbai for the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit at Bandra Kurla Complex on 1st May.
