School entry age fixed; Children of 3 years & above age eligible for Play Group

The Directorate of Primary Education has fixed minimum and maximum age limits for admission to 25 percent reserved seats in private schools under the Right to Education Act (RTE). Accordingly, the age limit for Play Group or Nursery has been fixed as minimum three years and maximum four years five months, and for Class I as minimum six years and maximum seven years five months till 31st December 2024.

When the process of admission in the new academic year starts, there is confusion among the parents about the exact age group to admit their children in play group/nursery, small group (Junior KG), big group (Senior KG) in pre-primary. But, the concern of the parents regarding the school admission according to the age group of the children has been removed by the Directorate of Primary Education.

According to ‘RTE’, it has already been done what should be the minimum age of school entry for children in the academic year 2024-25 for admission to 25 percent reserved seats for students from economically weak and disadvantaged sections in private schools. However, in order to make the admission process easier, the Primary Education Department has clarified the class in which the children should be admitted according to the minimum and maximum age group.

Also, while determining the minimum age of a child for school admission, the age up to 31st December is taken into account so that children born between July and December do not suffer educational losses. In this regard, a decision has been taken in September 2020 itself. The primary education department has given the information that the age limit of the children has been fixed on that basis.
