Exposure to ultra-processed foods has been directly linked to 32 health parameters, such as cancer, mortality, and disorders of the nervous system, respiratory system, heart, gastrointestinal tract, and metabolism.

The researchers, who were from Australia, the US, France, and Ireland, discovered strong evidence that a higher intake of ultra-processed foods was linked to a roughly 50% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, a 48–53% higher risk of anxiety and other common mental disorders, and a 12% higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers also discovered data linking a higher intake of ultra-processed foods to a 21 per cent higher risk of death from all causes, a 40–66 per cent higher risk of death from heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, sleep issues, and a 22 per cent higher risk of depression.

The researchers discovered a direct correlation between increased exposure to ultra-processed foods and increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression, wheezing, cancer, and adverse sleep-related issues.

Ultra-processed foods

Foods produced using industrial processes that are ultra-processed frequently include artificial ingredients, preservatives, and additives. They usually go through a number of procedures, including high-temperature cooking, hydrogenation, and extrusion. Sugary snacks, packaged baked goods, fast food, sugary drinks, and prepared meals are a few examples. These foods tend to be high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and salt, and low in fiber and important nutrients.

Frequent consumption of highly processed foods has been connected to a number of health problems, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and some types of cancer. Foods that are ultra-processed go through several industrial processes and are frequently enhanced with flavors, colors, emulsifiers, and other additives. These products also frequently have low vitamin and fiber contents and high added sugar, fat, and/or salt content.
