Pune: Flat buyers and tenants in the city have been known for discrimination on the basis of food and religious preferences. But a Marathi couple was taken aback to learn they couldn’t buy a flat as they were ‘Marathi Manus’.

The incident came into light after Trupi Devrukhkar posted a video about her horrifying experience on social media. Trupi narrated that she along with her husband had visited Mulund West to explore office space options. However, the local Gujarati community allegedly denied them housing due to their Marathi ethnicity.

According to Trupti, when she asked the reason behind such discrimination then, the officer bearer informed them about their rule. When Trupti asked them about the rulebook, they failed to provide it and thrashed them outside of the society, Trupi alleged in her viral video.

The video made rounds on social media sites and initiated debate on social media and within political circles, leading to a demand for action against those responsible.

In response to the incident, workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had approached the society officer bearer and asked questions about their discriminatory behaviour with Marathi Manus and demanded  an apology from those who refused housing to Trupti. MNS workers in Mulund confronted the individuals involved and compelled them to issue an apology.

The incident has created strong reactions from the society and raised questions over the lethargic attitude of the politicians. One of the users said that “No one is behind the Marathi Manus in Mumbai. Another user questioned, “Politicians only used Marathi Manus for election purposes. One of the flower of the MNS said, “Only Raj Saheb Thackery can give justices to Marathi Manus in Mumbai.’’

The incident has highlighted the importance of addressing discrimination based on ethnicity and has ignited a larger conversation about the need for tolerance and respect among diverse communities in Mumbai.
