PUNE: The success of the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L-1 missions has garnered global attention for India and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). However, it has come to light that ISRO’s popularity is being exploited by fraudsters.

An incident has come to light wherein a farmer from Pune was defrauded of Rs 1 crore by a gang of four individuals who claimed to be associated with ISRO. The farmer, who is a resident of Indapur taluka and is 40 years old, possessed a 250-year-old bronze pot that was purported to have “special electrical properties”.

The fraudsters convinced the farmer that ISRO and the US Space Research Agency, NASA, were willing to pay crores of rupees to conduct experiments on the pot.

As per the information received, they also claimed that the pot had unique qualities due to lightning strikes and that both ISRO and NASA had invested Rs 200–300 crore in the project.

The farmer was further told that the individual who contributed the most to the research would receive the largest share of the profits. Between 2014 and 2018, the four fraudsters extorted money from the farmer on multiple occasions, claiming that scientific experiments on the pot required significant funding.

Later, the farmer was lured by the promise of financial gain and even sold some of his land to finance the project. However, after handing over more than Rs 1 crore, the fraudsters cut off all contact with the farmer, leaving him to realize that he had been duped. A search is underway for accused Shiraz Shaikh Pansare, Umesh Umapure, Dhanaji Patil, and Rafiq Tamboli.

While talking to Pune Pulse, Dinesh Tayde, Police Inspector of Baramati Police Station, added, ”An FIR has been filed and a comprehensive investigation is underway in this case. At present, efforts are being made to locate the individuals responsible for the incident.”
