Single ward system in PMC, PCMC municipal elections

Maharashtra State Election Commission has issued an order to create rough draft of the Municipal Election Ward Limits. The order was issued on August 25, 2021 by Avinash Sanas, deputy commissioner of Election Commission, Maharashtra state directing it to all District Collectors to begin with the preparations of making rough draft of the ward structure. Municipal elections will be held in 18 Municipal Corporations across Maharashtra such as Bruhanmumbai, Thane, Ulhas Nagar, Bhiwandi – Nijampur, Panvel, Mira Bhayandar, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, Solapur, nashik, Malegaon, Parbhani, Nanded Waghala, Latur, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Chandrapur in February 2022.

The order also states that as per the Indian Constitution Section 243 K and 243 Z A all local governing bodies should prepare Voters List, control, inspection (review). All these responsibilities should be performed by the State Election Commission.  As per the Section 243 of Indian Constitution, and Maharashtra Municipal Act 1959 should hold elections before the term ends.

The state government had issued a Government Resolution on December 31, 2019 wherein Municipal Corporations should have single ward system. For this the population census should be considered of the year 2011. Based on this the rough draft should be drafted and the action on making this should start from August 27, 2021. This rough draft should be mailed immediately after it is drafted.
