PUNE: During a recent interview, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, who is renowned for his exceptional skills on the field, disclosed his decision to abstain from social media. Despite being a prominent figure in the cricketing world, Sharma has opted to disconnect from the virtual world, citing the distracting and time-consuming nature of social media as the reasons behind his choice.

In the interview, Sharma expounded on his rationale for this decision. He revealed that he had not had Twitter or Instagram on his phone for the past nine months, and instead, his wife manages any commercial posts on his behalf.

He perceives social media as a distraction and believes that it consumes valuable time and energy.

Sharma stated, “I don’t run people’s lives. If people love it, they love it. Social media these days is fake. I saw someone on the team bus in the morning saying, ki dekha ki nahi, isne yeh bola, usne yeh bola. Did you see this? He said this, that). They discuss it.”

He further added, “You see my phone, you can check it, I don’t have Twitter or Instagram on my phone for the past nine months. If we have to do any commercial post, my wife handles it. These are distractions, they all are on the phone the whole day. It’s a waste of time and energy. So I have decided not to have it on my phone because if it’s there, I will watch it.”

Sharma acknowledged the prevalence of social media in the lives of the younger generation but emphasized that he does not impose his views on others. He believes in letting people make their own choices regarding their online presence. “It’s the time we live in. The new generation is more on reel, Instagram, different social media; they all are into it,” he added.

Instead of sulking in seclusion, it is imperative for me to ensure that my captain, coach, and selectors recognize my value to the team. Thus, I have begun contemplating on this matter. Often, the reasons for exclusion may be unrelated to one’s abilities, but rather due to the team’s preference for a different combination.

My aim is to take actions that prevent the captain from overlooking my contributions. As the captain myself now, I comprehend that it is impossible to please everyone. Sharma’s decision to distance himself from social media aligns with his philosophy of simplifying his life and concentrating on what truly holds significance. He places great importance on genuine connections with loved ones and favors face-to-face interactions over virtual ones.

Sharma’s candid acknowledgment of his social media detox exemplifies his dedication to maintaining a clear and focused mindset. As he prepares to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming World Cup, he hopes that this choice will assist him in remaining grounded and focused on the task at hand. In a world where social media plays a prominent role in the lives of athletes and public figures, Rohit Sharma’s decision to disconnect serves as a reminder of the necessity to prioritize one’s mental well-being and remain true to oneself.
