In a discussion with Cyrus Broacha on the Housing.com YouTube channel, Soha Ali Khan shared fascinating details about her family’s ancestral residence.
This historic palace, known as Ibrahim Kothi, is located in Pataudi, Haryana.
The Pataudi family utilizes the palace for their holidays and also rents it out for film shoots.
Saif Ali Khan successfully reclaimed the Pataudi Palace from the hotel chain that had previously owned it. Spanning 10 acres, the palace boasts 150 rooms, including dressing rooms, bedrooms, billiard rooms, drawing rooms, and dining spaces.
During the construction of the house, her grandfather faced financial difficulties and resorted to using carpets to cover the floors.
Soha also mentioned that her grandmother, Sajida Sultan, was titled the begum of Bhopal, while her grandfather held the title of nawab of Pataudi.
The Palace, located in Haryana, was constructed by Iftikhar Ali Khan, the final nawab to rule Pataudi.
Her grandmother’s father felt a bit envious of her grandfather, who was an enthusiastic athlete. Her account of the construction of Pataudi Palace revealed that her grandfather, Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, erected it to win the favor of his future father-in-law.
“I was born after the privy purses and royal titles were abolished in 1970. My brother was born a prince, because he was born in 1970… With the titles comes a lot of responsibility and bills… My grandmother was the begum of Bhopal and my grandfather was the nawab of Pataudi; he loved her for many years but was not allowed to marry her… The Pataudi Palace was built to impress his father-in-law. If you go to Pataudi, you’ll see there’s a lot of carpets. He ran out of money for the marble, so underneath the carpets there’s a lot of cement,” added the actress.
Several recent films, including Animal, were filmed at the palace.
Soha has shared more information about her family.
She revealed that she manages the ‘generator room,’ which includes two bedrooms and a hall, and she often spends her vacations there. Additionally, Soha noted that her mother, the legendary actress Sharmila Tagore, is in charge of the entire Pataudi Palace, keeping track of both daily and monthly expenses.
