"Sorry, I Forgot to Pay": Indian Woman Allegedly Caught Shoplifting in US Store, Social Media Users Call it Embarrassing
A viral video showing an Indian woman accused of theft in a US store has sparked outrage online, with social media users calling it an embarrassment for the Indian diaspora.
An Indian woman has allegedly been caught shoplifting at a retail store in the United States, sparking widespread criticism on social media. In the viral video, the woman can be heard apologising and saying, “Sorry, I forgot to pay.”
While details such as her identity, the exact store location, and the value of the stolen items have not yet been officially confirmed, authorities are reportedly investigating the incident.
The footage quickly spread online, leading to a wave of condemnation. Many users expressed shame and frustration, arguing that such acts tarnish the image of the Indian community abroad. One social media user wrote, “Why do they steal from the US and other countries where they travel? These are often educated people who can afford foreign travel and education, yet they engage in such behaviour.”
Another commenter observed, “Cases of Indians caught shoplifting abroad have sparked outrage and even warnings from US authorities. Such acts damage the reputation of the entire diaspora. Crime is crime, and no amount of symbolism or appeals can override local laws.”
This latest controversy comes months after another similar case made headlines. In May, an Indian woman was investigated in Illinois for allegedly attempting to steal goods worth about ₹1.1 lakh from a Target store. According to reports, she had spent over seven hours inside the outlet before trying to leave with a cart full of unpaid items. Police bodycam footage from that case showed the woman apologising and saying, “I am really sorry to bother you. I am not from this country.” To which an officer reportedly replied, “Are you allowed to steal things in India? I didn’t think so.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the current case, while the video continues to fuel online discussions about accountability and how individual actions can affect the reputation of an entire community abroad.
