Speaking Marathi in Government Offices Now Mandatory in Maharashtra

Mumbai – The Maharashtra government has made it compulsory for officials in all government and semi-government offices across the state to communicate exclusively in Marathi.

A Government Resolution (GR) issued on Monday mandates the use of Marathi in local self-government bodies, government corporations, and government-aided establishments. The resolution also warns that officials failing to comply will face disciplinary action.

The decision aligns with the Marathi Language Policy, approved last year, which emphasizes the preservation, promotion, and development of Marathi in public affairs. As part of the implementation, the GR also mandates that personal computer (PC) keyboards in all offices must include Marathi Devanagari alphabets alongside Roman characters.
