Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced an extension of the deadline for online applications for admission to various undergraduate, postgraduate and interdisciplinary courses until 20th May.

The online application process, which commenced on 20th April, initially had a deadline set for 10th May. However, with a noticeable lack of enthusiasm from prospective students, SPPU has opted to grant an extended period for application submissions. The decreasing interest in SPPU’s courses can be attributed, in part, to the increasing presence of private universities in Pune. These institutions are increasingly competing for students’ attention, thereby diverting potential applicants away from SPPU.

According to SPPU sources, a wide array of courses are conducted across various departments, centres and faculties within the university. Entrance examinations serve as a mandatory requirement for admission to these courses. To facilitate this process, SPPU has scheduled online entrance exams for degree courses on 13th June and for postgraduate courses between 14th and 16th June. For admission to degree courses, candidates are expected to have successfully cleared their Class 12 examinations.

A senior official from SPPU’s admission department shed light on the underlying reasons behind the decline in student interest. “In the past two years, there has been a surge in private universities across Pune city, and students are gravitating towards nearby institutions for admissions. This trend has adversely impacted admissions to SPPU, with certain departments witnessing a significant number of vacant seats,” the official remarked.
